Star of the week!

Our star of the week this week is Joel. Joel is awesome - he is learning so fast, is reading really well and is always doing the right thing in class. I can rely upon him to be a helper, he has great manners and shows other new children how to learn.
Well done, Joel!

Week Three in Room One.

Welcome to our Bog in Room One!
We have had another busy, happy week and hopefully our photos will help you understand some of the things we have been learning and some of the new experiences we have shared.

MUSIC MAKING
Learning how to manipulate percussion instruments correctly, play together when required and keeping quiet at the right time are all key skills for music making and we have been learning the correct names for our instruments too.
Joel on triangle and Max with a tambourine.
Vinny playing the triangle carefully and Carey playing the bells.

Ella brought one of her little puppies into class for us to meet!
 HOCKEY SKILLS
This week and next we are very fortunate to have Craig teaching basic hockey skills to our children. I was completely blown away by their co-ordination - most of the class can use a hockey stick to push their ball with some form of control already after only one half hour session! Well done, team!

Shakana and Jack 'freezing' during 'Creep up Jack'.

 RUNNING SKILLS.
We have also been learning how to run correctly using our arms to pump and help us move faster. Janice Oliver came this week to help us improve our techniques and here you can see some of the children playing 'Rob the nest' with her super little bean bag toys.
Hadlee is speedy!

Mia is loving this so much!
 NUMBER WRITING
We have been learning to recognise and write our numbers and every child recorded the numbers they know how to write already in order that I may plan their next steps.
Kaylee is writing 1,3 and 4.

More about this one later - I cannot move the picture!

ART - we are making prints this week - these are our mirror prints. Whilst some children were making their prints, the others were making spiders - S is our letter this week.

Joel can write his numbers up to 7 and will be working on forming the numbers 2 and 3 the right way around.

Evie and Hadlee making their prints.

FREE TIME
At the beginning of the week we had beautiful weather and all the class were able to go out into the sandpit if they wished. To see them all working so well together was a real treat - everyone respected the other childs' space and looked after each other. max made a wonderful road and nobody trod on it...

Mia made a garden - isn't it lovely?

Xavier was making a castle and Shylah was digging.

Joel worked on the Maths programme on our computer and Carey was watching and learning too.

The girls ran their own little singing and ukulele session in our purple corner...
SPIRIT OF POLYNESIA
On Friday we had a real treat, Bernard came and gave a brilliant show. This was perfect for our culture topic and he sang songs, told stories and wore costumes from many different cultures. he taught Brianna part of his amazing hoop dance and selected a group of children to work with him and his poi.

Jack is on the far right and was amazing!

We now understand some of the Maori moku on his face.

Kaylee can write her own name so well!

Mrs Lawrence was teaching a couple of days this week whilst Mrs Savill carried our New Entrant assessments on some of the children.

This is Mrs Probert. She has started teaching with Mrs Savill and is taking some of the children in the mornings for their group work in Maths, Reading and Writing. Everyone comes together when the lessons are not group oriented and in the afternoons we are all in Room One with Mrs Savill. It is wonderful to have Mrs Probert with us.

More music - Evie and Shylah.
 POETRY
Our poem this week is Sleep:

Sleep creeps up on me,
Slowly in waves.
Waves slowly sweep away
Thoughts of the day.

We have been learning this poem and pretending to sleep - there is a large display on the wall in our room if you would like to view the photographs - they are gorgeous!

This is Janice Oliver form Sport Tasman.

Star of the week, week two.

Ava is our star of the week.
Ava received her certificate in recognition of her great learning. She is always keen to do her very best, she listens well, asks and answers questions, has good manners and is always smiling and wanting to help others. She has waited patiently for this award and I chose her this week as her reading has really taken off, she is flying now!

Star of the week! Week One

Our Star of the week in the first week at school this term was Renee chosen by Mrs Eades our reliever. Renee is a delight to teach, she is a good listener, a lovely friend to others and is loving being at school!

Welcome to Room One in Term Two!

Welcome to Room One... Firstly apologies for not having this terms Blog up and running sooner, but due to circumstances way beyond my control, I was unable to do so before now. I hope the bumper edition of news helps this week!

SHARING TIME - Monday and Thursday mornings are times we share our experiences or toys with our class mates and here you can see the children enjoying oral language opportunities with each other.

Louis was very brave in the holidays!

 QUIET MOMENTS.
Evelyn loves to read books to herself and it was a delight to 'snap' her concentrating so well.
 FREE PLAY.
The afternoon is sometimes very warm and this week we made the most of the weather and the children were able to enjoy themselves in our sandpit right outside the classroom, it's perfect!
 MATHS
We were exploring fractions in Room One and began by making one whole ball of play dough then cut it in two halves.

Xavier has made his whole ball into two pieces. We are learning that halves must be equal in size.
 JUMP JAM
Mrs Malthus is teaching the Junior Syndicate Jump Jam as part of our getting fit in order to be able to complete the cross country later this term. Here you can see the children listening and joining in very well. Normally we do Jump Jam in the hall but this week we worked outside and the children and staff loved it. Thanks, Mrs Malthus!

On our way back to class - Malachi was the special helper so he was our line leader.
 TOPIC.
Our whole school topic unit this term is entitled' same, same but different' and we are learning about what it means to live in different countries and how other people live their lives. Andy comes from Vietnam and his Mum, Kim, came to share with us last Thursday. We had a really interesting time with her, trying on a special hat, looking at photos and asking questions.
Kim is using our 'world' to show where to find Vietnam.

Look at Renee! She loves Kim's hat!

These are special 'lucky bags' to keep money in all year to bring good luck.

 DISCOVERY TIME
On Friday afternoons, we have time to explore and play with members of Room three and sometimes make crafts. Here you can see Sophia and Shylah making tea-pot cards.

Malachi is a pirate today!

Ella is a reindeer!

Carey coloured his tea-pot beautifully!

Evelyn loves the pink hat...

Xavier could not wait to put this dress on.

Evie chose a hat to wear.
 STORY TIME
Sometimes children from Room 11 come to help in Room One and read the story after lunch whilst i talk with the Peer Mediators who were on duty. The class love to listen to older children which is why we also have buddy reading with Room Seven on a Thursday afternoon.

Story time!

Shakana and her whole shape.

 HEARTY FUN
It is also super to join in with the Hearty Fun dvd in class in the morning to get our heart rates up and the blood whizzing around our brains..

 SCHOOL TOUR.
We explored different parts of the school in order that our new children know where they need to go at different times of the day, here you can see us walking back to class from the hall where we are learning to sit for assembly time.
 MAKING APPLES!
We made apple puppets to dance on the desk with our fingers as part of learning about the letter 'a' although the children preferred to use them as masks!
Can you see Joel and Ava?

Careful counting.
 NZSL.
Once a week we have Cathy from the Hearing House and she takes us for a sign language lesson. We use signing every day in our class so if your children come home wanting to 'speak' with you in sign please encourage them to teach you what they know. here we are learning the sign for 'jump'.

Some more apples...
SUPER READERS
Shakana and Sophia have now joined Ava and Evie and know all the sight words in Room One! Well done with your reading, girls!
One of our books mentioned the word 'mobile' this week and the class did not know what that meant so in order to fully explain that mobile is used in a number of ways, I brought the mobile I made years ago for Kimberley. Of course, the children wanted to lie down like a baby in a cot and listen to the lullaby and watch the mobile turn...Patrick's mobile is also in our room now and we had a look at my mobile phone too..
We had a visit from our friends at the Birchwood Kindy who will soon be turning five and joining us in our class. Thanks Barbara for visiting on Thursday!

I hope that gives you all an idea of our week..
